If Kate Bush, Siouxie Sioux, Depeche Mode and Frankie Knuckles went on a Doherty sized crack rampage in Iggy and Bowie’s Berlin studio then made a record, you’d get some idea of what HK 119 is like. The alter ego of Heidi Kilpelainen, melding dark, industrial euro-techno, gothic, eighties songwriting and glam rock poses, HK 119 is a frightening electro-fuelled horrorshow. But in a good way. On songs like ‘Malfunction’, ‘23.45’ and ‘Power Cut’, ear melting synth lines and brain shattering drums collide with a voice like a vampiric Hazel O’Connor. It’s disturbing stuff but well worth a listen. You might start to develop a fondness for black though.
