Michelle Lawson's Debut Single - I Just Wanna Say

With the music industry’s annual cut off point for releasing new artists looming with the onset of autumn, there is traditionally a spate of new female solo artists appearing in September. This year is no different, with every major label eager that their ‘discovery’ will be the one crowned with the accolade of originality and popularity.

Mercury’s Fontana label is proud to release long-term hopeful Michelle Lawson. She’s simply a cut above the rest.

Born in Bootle near Liverpool, Michelle was officially uncovered by the music industry when she was the undisputed winner of Trevor Nelson’s Urban Music Prize in 2001. A white soul singer of the highest calibre with an outstandingly powerful voice, Michelle has developed a sound that she terms ‘retro with the stamp of today’ and one that clearly shows the influences of the Motown chanteuses. A diverse team of co-writers including John McLaughlin, Steve Du Berry, Peter Vetesse and Zero 7 have contributed to Michelle’s debut record.

Michelle’s debut single ‘I Just Wanna Say’ which features a sample from Freda Payne’s ‘How Do You Say I Don’t Love You Anymore’, showcases her aptitude for penning lyrics about the journey of emotions that many women embark upon when dealing with the subject of love. Her music encapsulates the spirit of a woman emerging from a broken relationship, hurt but with her head still held high.

Michelle co-wrote ‘I Just Wanna Say’ with Northern big beat soulsters J-Walk who included the track as an instrumental (‘Soul Vibration’) on their 2002 record ‘A Night On The Rocks’

Remixes come from Cosmos, Domu, Bimbo Jones, and Soda Club. Domu who has recently remixed The Cinematic Orchestra, and released his own Rima project on Compost has given ‘I Just Wanna Say’ a superb leftfield flavour. For more information on Michelle Lawson, please click on the link below:
