In conversation: NEEDTOBREATHE

Hey NEEDTOBREATHE guys, how you doing? Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
Hey! Thanks for having us. We are an American rock and roll band from South Carolina.

So, to the new record. The latest track, ‘NO EXCUSES,’ feels like a bit of a change of pace, what can we expect from H A R D L O V E?
We were inspired by so many different styles of music during this process. From ‘60s soul to ‘90s R&B, we explored it all. Thematically, H A R D L O V E is all about redemption through perseverance and not giving up. The record has lots of tough sounds and big drums throughout. We wanted to take this record further sonically than we ever have before.

If you could only choose one song from the record to showcase where you are as a band, which would it be, and why?
Probably 'CLEAR' which is the last song on the record. It’s more about the focus and clarity of realizing what’s most important to you in the world.

How is it with brothers in the band? I’ve read there was a tough period, is that just what happens with family? Or is it the pressure of making music that exacerbate things?
It was a lot of things. We were all a mess and had to get to the point of realizing that NEEDTOBREATHE is not as important as the people in it and supporting it. When we were able to accept that, we were able to work together again and the creativity came rushing back.

Did the last record help the band’s relationships, or was it despite the music that you’re still going?
The last record documented the hardest couple of years for us as a band. We figured some things out toward the end of the process that saved us as a band and as a family. Looking back, the record serves a reminder of where we were, and how far we’ve come.

So, how much of a breakthrough album did Rivers In The Wasteland feel? Certainly in the UK it was the first time we’d really heard much of your music.
The response to the record was overwhelming. It was a hard record for us to make so to know people have worn those songs on their sleeves is the ultimate honor.

You got a Grammy nomination for ‘Mulitplied’ from that record; how did that feel?
It was a fun experience. We got to take our wives/girlfriends with us so they got to get all dressed up and walk the red carpet. Even though we didn’t win, it was cool to celebrate the record and be with other great acts in the industry.

You’re from South Carolina, how would you describe your home state to us in the UK?
South Carolina, like all of the Southern United States, is rich in culture and beauty. There are so many different places to go and things to do. It is a very inspiring part of the earth. Charleston, where the band is based, also has some of the best restaurants in the entire world. You should come visit and we’ll show you around!

And how did growing up there affect the music you’re making?
There is music everywhere in the South. From people on street corners to gospel music in the churches, there is music all around. For us, it was easy to be inspired because we had so many different kinds of music flowing in and through us. We were moved by Folk, Rock, Gospel, Country and even Pop music. It made for an interesting blend that made us who we are today.

You’ve announced a US tour for later in the year; what do you love about touring?
Seeing the world…

And hate?
Seeing the world through the windows of a tour bus.

So where’s the strangest place you’ve played live?
We’ve done it all throughout the years. From birthday parties to aquariums, you never know where you might see us play.

You social media accounts are pretty active. Do you see social media as a blessing or a curse?
I think it has been a great way for us to connect with the fans. Who knows what it will look like 10 years from now. That might be scary. But for now, we are just InstaTWITbook-ing away.

If you could only listen to one song this week, what would it be?
'Forever Young' by Bob Dylan or 'Waterfalls' by TLC. Or a mashup of them both.

What’s the question we should have asked you today but haven’t?
“Where did you get your outfit? You look amazing!”

Finally, how do you take your coffee? Or alcohol?
Cream and sugar and red wine. Not together.

The band's new record, H A R D L O V E, is out now. And will almost certainly be available from all good online music places and some supermarkets. All the information you'll ever need is available on their website
