The Fontaines share 'Cold' from their forthcoming EP

Doo-wop and new-wave don’t sound like they should go well together, but The Fontaines might just change your mind. A four-piece band based out of Los Angeles, they were formed in 2013 by brother and sister Hank and Charlotte Fontaine.

The Fontaines' new EP ii released on 24 June is described as "a meaty retro pop sound with an occasional indie rock edge." You can decide for yourself by listening to their fantastic track 'Cold', before reading further details below.

The Fontaines started shortly after the Texas native Charlotte, 21, decided to follow her older brother Hank, 26, out to Los Angeles after graduating high school. “Hank was in between what he refers to as ‘unremarkable bands,’ and we both lucked out as far as needing writing partners at the same time,” she says about the band’s inception. Together with Scott Zimmerman on drums and Jason DeMayo on bass, The Fontaines have forged ahead with Charlotte on lead vocals and Hank on lead guitar. After releasing their first single “Paul Newman” in 2014, the band went on to play just about “every venue in LA,” and have since released their self-titled EP.

By pulling from influences such as '60s girl groups and artists such as Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra, the band has created its own unique sound the siblings describe as “new-wop.” “Hank and I do all the writing,” says Charlotte, but her brother adds, “We always do our best writing under pressure. We can’t write just for writing’s sake.”

Since the drop of their EP, The Fontaines have picked up quite a bit of attention from various LA publications, including LA Weekly, as well as the trade publication Music Connection Magazine. Their songs have also been featured on various college radio stations, which landed them at #136 on the CMJ music charts — not to mention the spins they’ve been getting on LA’s KROQ radio.

Together with their “Fantaines,” The Fontaines are starting to make waves. But all of this is just the beginning for them — and they don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.
