Siblings SHEL look set to have a great 2016, their recent cover of 'Enter Sandman' drew critical acclaim and their debut album, Just Crazy Enough, lands just a few day away on 27th May. It seems appropriate for you to meet them, don't you think?
Hi SHEL! Would you like to introduce yourself to the TMF readership?
Well, we’re four sisters born and raised in Fort Collins, Colorado and we travel the world making music together. We do normal sibling things like fight and develop secret handshakes, we also share most things, including our current dream to create our own little musical world where people can come and escape with us.
Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you each think 'I want to do this!'
Playing ’A Hard Days Night’ on my little cassette player. We grew up on The Beatles. It was really them, Led Zeppelin, The Marx Brothers and our dad who inspired us to start playing music.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?
We keep no secrets on our MP3 players, I know for a fact Liza has some Justin Bieber on hers. I definitely have our album on there, I like to compare the textures and mastering to my favourite records as a study.
Is there any style of music you just don't get?
Well, not a particular style. As a rule I don’t get the unimaginative song writing trend about parties, cheating, and substance abuse as a means of coping with excess and priviledge.
Are there any artists you'd really like to collaborate with in the future?
Lots. Jack White, Emmylou Harris, Sting, St. Vincent, The Punch Brothers, Muse, Ed Sheeran, Alt-Jay.
What's next for SHEL?
Tomorrow and whatever craziness it brings with it. Long term, we’re touring notionally and creating our own music videos in support of our new album Just Crazy Enough. We’re excited to return to the UK sometime in near future, and of course we’re looking forward to a few days off here and there where we can see our family and the old mountains back home.
What's the question we should have asked you today?
Probably the question we should ask ourselves more often. What are we doing to make a difference?
We’re really excited about a campaign we’ve launched recently encouraging our fans to join us in our ‘Just Crazy Enough Challenge’ and create a stylish minimal wardrobe using only clothing they own, find at a thrift store, or purchase from an ethically sourced company.
