Various - Classic Disney Box Set

My daughter is about a month shy of turning four and song lyrics no longer pose much of a problem to her. Unsurprisingly, then, my Dr Dre, Big Black, Cypress Hill and Revolting Cocks albums are drifting towards the back of my collection, only to be brought out late at night when the kids are in bed. Worse are the long car journeys in which the shout of, "Turn that droning off!" comes from the back seat when attempting to pass the time and the miles with Radios 3, 4 or 5.

Imagine, then, my joy in finding this - a 5x disc box set containing the very best songs from sixty years of Disney, beginning with 1937's Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs and closing with 1998's Mulan. Of course, as Disney has released soundtrack albums over the years, this box set only offers the very best of what's available. Even looking at only the first ten songs on the track list - from Aladdin's A Whole New World, through three songs from both The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, a couple from Mary Poppins and the title track from Beauty And The Beast - the quality of this release should be absolutely clear.

The five discs here had been individually released before being compiled in this box set and with the set being planned to extend beyond one or two albums, there's a consistent number of what one might call big songs across each of the five discs. So, whilst discs one, two and three include all of the songs from The Lion King, songs from Beauty And The Beast, for example, are included on disc five. Meanwhile, the last two discs in the set include such great and occasionally unexpected songs as Oogie Boogie's Song (The Nightmare Before Christmas), Give A Little Whistle (Pinocchio), I'm Wishing/One Love (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs), Ev'rybody Wants To Be A Cat (The Aristocats) and When I See An Elephant Fly (Dumbo, obviously). Along the way there are some chances to remember just how good, and in some instances how odd, Disney's animated films have been. So, whilst there are the songs of the villains, such as Scar's call to the hyenas to Be Prepared, Gaston's rousing of the villagers in The Mob Song and Kaa's serenading of Mowgli as a prospective meal in Trust In Me, the strangest and spookiest song of all is Pink Elephants On Parade from Dumbo, which is an unsettling little song that scores the oddest sequence in any film produced by Disney.

Then again, being Disney, there are such a large number of uplifting songs that this box set ranks alongside Phil Spector's Back To Mono for sheer enjoyment. Toy Story's You've Got A Friend In Me is such a wonderful song about lifelong friendship that one is tempted to go back to Randy Newman's back catalogue in search of similar songs. Similarly, The Bare Necessities and I Wanna Be Like You, both of which are from The Jungle Book, have surprisingly witty lyrics and, like the later songs from The Aristocats, mix jazz with the kind of pop that will get even the most reluctant kids moving. And, whilst the songs from Peter Pan - Following The Leader, The Second Star To The Right and You Can Fly! - sound slightly better once removed from the film, songs like Once Upon A Dream, Let's Go Fly A Kite, Heigh Ho and Thomas O'Malley Cat are simply wonderful regardless of appearing in their respective films on these discs.

Sadly, there are a few tracks missing from the boxset, the presence of which would have made it complete. For example, whilst it would have been great to have had the reprise of Feed The Birds (Tuppence A Bag) from Mary Poppins, which scores the genuinely affecting sequence in which Jane and Michael's father, George, returns to the bank for his telling off from the old Mr Dawes, it's understandable that it has not been included given that it would have been considered as part of a score rather than a song. What is much less forgivable, however, is the lack of any songs from The Rescuers, which is particularly odd given that Someone's Waiting For You was nominated for an Academy Award and that both The Journey and Tomorrow Is Another Day are amongst the best songs ever to grace a Disney film.

Priced at anywhere between £16.99 (Play) and £20.99 (Amazon), this is tremendous value, containing, as it does, one of the highest ratio of great songs to filler that is seen on any box set anywhere. When priced alone, each individual disc sells for £8.99 so to get all five for the price of two is remarkable.

Undoubtedly, you'll have one last fear that will be, as with the Top Of The Pops albums of the late-seventies and early-eighties, that each of the songs avoid paying royalties to the original artists by employing stooges who sound nothing like we imagine they should. For that, worry not, these are the original songs taken from the soundtrack albums recorded for the original films and each one sounds fantastic. It there is one problem with this box set, it's that the box that holds the five discs is a little flimsy, but otherwise, this is a wonderful release from track one through to track one-hundred-and-twenty-five.

With Christmas coming, you could do so much worse than to buy this box set, it really is terrific. Since it came into our house, trips out in the car have been endless singalongs to Chim Chim Cher-ee, Let's Go Fly A Kite and Following The Leader. Awfully cute that may well sound but when the previous months saw the McCusker family drive along in silence but for the telling of remembered stories, the best of Disney is a blessed relief - fantastic stuff indeed.
