Introducing: Hannah Trigwell
Leeds own YouTube star Hannah Trigwell is embarking on a mini tour of the UK in May to support her latest single 'Another Beautiful Mistake'. We posed a few questions about social media and her approach to songwriting among other things, and Hannah took time away from her near 400k YouTube subscribers to answer.
Hello there Hannah, could you introduce yourself to The Music Fix readers?
Hey! I'm a 25 year old singer-songwriter from Leeds, UK. First started playing acoustic guitar but now I dabble with electric and also bass... my new single 'Another Beautiful Mistake' sums me up musically!
How did things get started for you?
I got my start busking on the streets of Leeds before uploading videos of my performances to YouTube. Whilst I was in University I released a couple of original EPs and toured the UK and Europe; music has always been a huge passion of mine. Juggling music with education was pretty difficult... but totally rewarding!
Tell us about your single, ‘Another Beautiful Mistake’.
'Another Beautiful Mistake' is about a relationship which is kind of a car-crash, and also that feeling of being out of control when love becomes unrequited. Musically I was inspired by Phil Collins drumming, old-school electric guitar riffs and more modern electro/synth elements.
How do you approach songwriting?
It's different for me with every song. Usually I start with the music and then write lyrics over that. A lot of the time lyrics or a melody will come to me randomly when I'm not actually in the process of writing a song - I like to record those kinds of ideas on the go and use them when I can.
What have you been listening to that finds its way into your music?
Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran, Phil Collins, Tegan & Sara, The 1975... music with a strong beat.
How do you get on with touring? Is it a pain in the butt or good fun?
It's SO much fun. I absolutely love it. It's hard missing loved ones but I love it when they can come to shows. Seeing different places and playing for people every night is amazing.
Where’s the strangest place you’ve played live?
I played in a strip club for a Grime Night once... that was different...
You’ve pretty had a huge impact on YouTube; is social media a blessing or curse for artists?
It's been a blessing for me, I think it can add to the pressure to portray yourself in a certain way, and you need to prepare for criticisms, but I think overall it is a great thing. Communication is key to get people to come and see you on tour, and social media certainly helps.
Are you excited for 2016, how do you see it playing out for you?
Yes totally! I will soon be going back to Germany to record some new music, tunes that I am so excited about getting out there! 2016 for me will be a lot of live shows, tour diaries, songwriting, new singles, new music videos... it's going to be a great one.
We always like to check whether there’s a musical style you just don’t get?
I like pretty much everything. Really hardcore thrash metal... I'm not so sure, but I could get into the right frame of mind to lose myself to it.
If you could only listen to one song this week, what would it be?
I'm loving 'Loudspeaker' by MUNA.
