Nubiyan Twist reveal new EP 'Siren Song'

London label Wormfood is proud to present the second full release from 12 piece afro/soul/jazz sensation Nubiyan Twist.

Much-loved for their trademark big band blend of afrobeat, soul, jazz, dub, hip hop and Latin influences, Nubiyan Twist follow up their critically acclaimed 2015 debut album with their much-awaited second full release, keeping their trademark power while showcasing the more delicate, jazzy elements of their sound.

Their March 2015 debut album received huge support online, digitally and on radio, being championed by Huey Morgan, Craig Charles and David Rodigan and receiving 4* and 5* reviews in the national press as well as specialist world, jazz soul and hiphop channels.

This second full release is a refined, mature series of compositions, showcasing the different elements of their sound. The eponymous debut song, ‘Siren Song’, shows off their huge horn arrangements, fusing their trademark afrobeat sound with hugely confident, captivating vocal delivery from lead singer Nubiya Brandon (who also features with The Hempolics), along with the powerful sax solo work of Denis Scully.

‘Headhunter’ is a gutsy, feelgood summertime anthem, with a catchy vocal, big band sound and monstrous trombone solo from Josh Podbury, showing exactly why they have developed such a powerful reputation for live performance, smashing festival main stages across the UK and Europe.

‘Crocodile’’s cool, menacing hiphop beat allows Nubiya space to show off her sassier, more formidable side, with her trademark UK-accent spoken word delivery, underpinned by classy guitar licks from guitarist and producer Tom Excell and developing to a full-blown 5 piece horn harmony epic.

‘Him Himself’ brings Brazilian vocalist + percussionist Pilo Adami to the fore, with a Portuguese vocal of self-discovery reminiscent of Jorge Ben and the giants of Brazilian music, backed up by a driving afrobeat energy powered by the ridiculously crisp drum work of Finn Booth, and featuring guest Jackie Oates on fiddle and BV.

“Work House Mode” is a delicate, laid-back jazz reworking to their hiphop classic ‘Work House’ from their 2015 debut album, foregrounding the composure of Nubiya Brandon’s vocals – confirming her as a true vocalist in the tradition of Billy, Ella and Sarah Vaughan, while allowing space for the poignant work of pianist Oliver Cadman.

Grown in the fertile Leeds music scene while studying at Leeds College Of Music, Nubiyan Twist are now mostly resident in London, with a hardcore faction based at Henwood Studios, the custom studio they built in Oxfordshire out of straw bales and cement as Nubiyan HQ.

Justly celebrated for their mesmerising live performances, over the band’s 4 year lifespan they’ve collaborated with Ruby Wood (Submotion Orchestra), played alongside De La Soul, Bonobo, Jazzanova, Quantic, MF Doom, Robert Glasper Experiment, Gentlemen’s Dub Club and DJ Yoda, and can count BBC 6 Music’s Huey Morgan, Craig Charles and David Rodigan as fans.
