SXSW 2016 - Monday - Austin, Texas
South By South West is an industry-based music conference/festival located in Austin, Texas. An average of 2,500 bands play over a period of five days so it's a great opportunity to watch the latest up and coming acts from around the world alongside more established bands playing slightly more intimate venues than they are used to.
My eleventh trip to Austin started with a visit to Spotify House. The music side of SXSW doesn't officially start until Tuesday, but there's always something on offer on a Monday, with the Spotify celebrations a great place to kick things off, with vintage soul singer Charles Bradley setting things up nicely.
I had been looking forward to Monday's Spotify proceedings due to the appearance of Lucius and Miguel on the bill. Lucius are one of my favourite current acts, and have just released their phenomenal second album - Good Grief, so I was eager to hear the new songs live. I'm also always guaranteed to have a good time while watching Miguel do his thing; he's a fantastic front man.
Both acts really delivered, but it was Canadian rapper Tory Lanez that stole the afternoon, with stage diving, crowd surfing and scaling heights the order of the day.
My evening took in a couple of venues, with Flock Of Dimes, the solo project from Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, set at The Barracuda Club and Afrobeat songstress - Jojo Abots Latitude 30 performance the night's highlights, with Jojo's "stage invaders"adding to the fun, and a great way to end my Monday SX.
