Lily & Madeleine - Keep It Together
After a strong showing with 2013’s self-titled debut, then solidifying that with quickfire follow-up Fumes in 2014, Indianapolis sisters Lily & Madeleine took some time out. Well a year. And now they’re back, with their third album in four years. Now you might think that’s not enough time to see a significant progression in their sound but there’s nothing that’s further from the truth. Keep It Together is a world away from their debut and more sophisticated than might be expected from a 21 and 18 year old. The key marker of the duo’s sound is the perfectly aligned harmonies that continue to be central to their charm.
Album three finds a maturity developed over their previous two releases, the sweetness and beautiful simplicity has given way to something more layered and varied. There’s the slacker rock vibe of ‘For The Weak’, a dreaminess to ‘Westfields’ and ‘Midwest Kid’, and a playful charm to ‘Hotel Pool’. There’s also the small matter of the continued experimenting with their vocal patterns, harmonies still appear but don’t dominate as they have in the past; ‘Hourglass’ is a good example of their developing vocal interchanges. The sisters have performed quite some feat, somehow keeping everything that’s core to them being them, yet expanding their sound, adding layers of production and writing more pointed lyrics. All this means this Keep It Together is their most accessible outing yet, it’s also their best.
