Charli XCX launches Vroom Vroom records, announces new EP and debuts TWO new acts!
Where to start? Dark-pop starlet Charli XCX has been busy - not only has she been working on her new EP, Vroom Vroom, she's also found time to launch an Atlantic Records backed subsidiary, Vroom Vroom Records AND on top of all that she's launching the careers of TWO new acts - RIVRS and Cuckoolander.
We'll start off with this stream of the title track from the upcoming Vroom Vroom EP...
After touring the globe over the past couple of years to mark the release of her critically acclaimed second studio album SUCKER (over 850,000 global album sales to date), having recently penned Selina Gomez’s US #1 “Same Old Love”, the Billboard ‘Hitmaker of the Year’ (2014) and Sesac ‘Songwriter of the Year’ (2013) has worked with electronic/synth-pop producer SOPHIE on the new EP venture. Charli’s ‘Vroom Vroom EP’showcases her prowess for producing musical gold and was recorded in Stockholm last year. At the end of 2015, Charli unveiled the now lead track, which went onto receive a wealth of chatter across the Internet with its thrumming beats and noisy composition. To coincide with this exciting news, Charli has been confirmed to host her own Beats 1 radio show starting on Friday 26th February at 8pm UK time – the shows will take place every fortnight. Her EP track ‘Trophy’ will also receive its first play with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 tonight, alongside an on air interview.
Charli commented – "Vroom Vroom Recordings is my new, experimental pop label and it will combine my love for bubblegum pop with mystery and darkness. The artists coming up through it will be sharp, potent, deadly, and ultimately, will leave their mark on pop music. RIVRS and CuckooLander are two artists who have so much intelligence, pop sensibility and potential - they know what they want and both have great vision. That inspires me and it's why I want to work with them. I've always been fascinated by shy and introvert people - it's something that I am mostly not - and I feel both acts are in ways. It captivates me and sucks me in, and I think their music will do the same for others. I've worked with SOPHIE on the new EP and what we create together speaks for itself. Sometimes we get aggressive, sometimes we get beautiful; he pushes me and I push him. I'm making beautiful party songs right now and this is just the start. The album goes to other places and I can't wait for people to hear it. I feel the most creative I have in a long time and I couldn't be more excited for the next chapter.”
23-year-old Charlotte Aitchison aka Charli XCX will be hosting a very special ‘Vroom Vroom Recordings presents…’ show at the Ace Hotel, London on Friday 11th March. With an exclusive DJ set from Charli herself, RIVRS will be performing and DJ sets will follow from CuckooLander and PC Music’s Hannah Diamond (buy tickets here). We've got the video from RIVRS debut track, 'Friend/Lover' below...
Charlotte Mallory (vocalist) and Fin Munro (multi-instrumentalist/keys) aka RIVRS are set to invade the airwaves over coming months with their elevating synths, seductive vocals and glistening pop. The duo’s sound draws inspiration from an array of artists such as Saint Etienne, Everything But The Girl as well as ‘80s indie pioneers, The Cure. Their nocturnal debut track ‘Friend/Lover’, which is one of the first songs they wrote, explores a personal relationship with its synth leanings and euphoric production, marking the very beginning of RIVRS assured rise. RIVRS commented – "'Friend Lover' is a song about unrequited love. We worked on the video with director Hannah Marshall, and it focuses on the idea of feeling trapped and unsure as to whether you should let your feelings for a friend be known." You can watch the beautiful, accompanying video to ‘Friend/Lover’ below, produced by Hannah Marshall. At the end of last year, the duo unveiled their track ‘Last Love’, which launched on the New Faces II compilation from influential French label, Kitsuné Records and premiered on Billboard.com. They also played a sold-out show at London’s Camden Barfly. RIVRS are currently working on their debut album with Mark Ralph (Hot Chip, Years & Years).

London-born, one-woman powerhouse and multi-instrumentalist, CuckooLander, has unleashed her track ‘Beating Myself Up’, produced by Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend. Speaking about the track, she commented – “Beating Myself Up is a melancholic drifter about coping. I hope it takes listeners on a lullabying journey." With a musical landscape bearing many guises - euphoric riffs, soaring melodies, heart wrenching ballads – Holly Hardy aka CuckooLander draws an eclectic mix of musical influences ranging from Deftones and Silverchair to Prince and Earth Wind and Fire. At the end of 2015, CuckooLander self-released her self-titled EP, which was championed by the likes of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart, created buoyant chatter across the blogosphere and garnered tips from the likes of NME and The Independent. She’s already landed support tours with Charli XCX and The Libertines, performed at last year’s British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park, London and lent her songwriting abilities to The Hunger Games official soundtrack on ‘Kingdom’ – a song she co-wrote with Charli, Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran) and Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend).
