Frog - Frog EP
So who are Frog then? Well, in a fair world these two lads from Queens, NYC would have courted indie stardom already but of course it's oujob to spread the word. Frog are a two-piece indie rock band (in the most traditional sense of the term) consisting of Tom White (the destroyer) and Dan Bateman (the Gozarian) who play genuinely moving ramshackle rock n' roll that rouses intrigue, nostalgia and a strange sense of comfort. If you've already had the pleasure of hearing their 2015 debut album Kind of Blah, you'll know exactly what I mean.
Frog is actually a much needed re-release of a 2012 EP which till now has vegetated on Bandcamp with little attention. The ever brilliant Audio Antihero have now repackaged this wonderful set of seven songs on vinyl, CD and cassette giving fans and newcomers a second chance to discover the band's exceptional beginnings. Musically this is just as accomplished as their later work with opener 'Ichabod Crane' providing a fervent opener that perfectly showcases their erratic yet melodic guitar work and harmonious energy. The real star of this release is the 8 minute long prog-pop deluge of 'Space Jam' which further captures the pair's eccentricities and ambition. If you're a Pavement or Sparklehorse fan desperate for a band that doesn't regurgitate the same tired lo-fi tropes, then well, you've found them – Frog are the real deal.
