Little Big Town - Brooklyn Bowl, London
After ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris had been on stage to confirm the line-up for the 2016 version of C2C Country To Country festival it was left to Alabama’s Little Big Town to continue the positive mood that the announcement generated and bring Nashville’s big time country music to a rainy London evening.
And boy did they deliver. The best of their recent Painkillers record anchored the 75 minute set: the party time of ‘Day Drinking’, low down groove of ‘Faster Gun’, reggae styling of the title track and late night groove of ‘Tumble And Fall’, and the quartet were boosted by the reception of the crowd assembled in the sometime bowling alley. The chemistry among the four (Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Phillip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook) gives the set a real spirit; though that shouldn’t be surprising as the band have been together for over 15 years and that Fairchild and Westbrook have been married for almost a decade. A smattering of discontent is heard though when Fairchild outed Schlapman for being a former brunette, even that was taken in good fun amongst the band.
Mixing the best of their catalogue (‘Front Porch Thing’, ‘Pontoon’, the singable ‘Sober’) with the new tracks made this a crowd pleasing turn, and perfect for the launch night of the C2C festival. Best was saved till almost the end though as the encore kicked off with the much talked about ‘Girl Crush’. Strip away all the hot air and leave the song stripped down to a live setting like the Brooklyn Bowl and you really hear the song for what it is: one of the all time great country songs. See you again in March 2016 Little Big Town.
