Mac DeMarco - Motion, Bristol

If you’ve heard anything about a Mac DeMarco live show then it’s probably something that’s a bit leftfield. He’s been know to get up to plenty of weird and wacky antics on stage over the years. Most recently he crowdsurfed in London at the Roundhouse. On the back of 2014’s breakout album, Salad Days, and August’s mini album Another One DeMarco is on the UK gigging trail again. After playing End Of The Road Festival the Canadian brought his slacker vibes to former nightclub Motion, now one of Bristol’s multitude of live music venues.

The laid back vibe of DeMarco’s music is instantly reflected by his onstage demeanor; he’s scruffy and delightfully goofy, as expected, and the rest of his band follow suit. The stream of non-sequiturs from guitarist Andrew Charles White ("I have only one question, has anyone ever felt.lonely?”) and random mumblings of bassist Paul McGarry only add to the sense of charm and ramshackleness. Along with the tongue out antics is a somewhat unique happiness at interacting with any random object thrown onto the stage; at one point Demarco has heart-shaped sunglasses and a baseball cap, McGarry is wearing a bra, and White toking on a vape. All thrown on the stage by various crazed punters.

And that crowd is fervent, producing a crackling atmosphere and singing along to many of the songs DeMarco plays from his most recent EP: ‘Another One’ elicits the biggest singalong, but the reaction to all songs is mighty impressive considering it's late August release date. That most of the crowd is made up of middle England’s youth suggests that this 25 year old from Alberta has hit a slacker sweet spot with those teens. Most impressive though we the title track from 2014’s brilliant album, ‘Salad Days’, ‘Ode To Viceroy’ and the stupendous, wandering, epic that closed the main set ‘Still Together’.

The show was best summed up by the loud, crazy, cover that was the entire encore. An almost unrecognisable ‘Enter Sandman’ showed the band at their noisiest and most experimental. Though way more tame than the legendary stories, it was a kooky evening rounded off in a totally unique way. And that really is a Mac DeMarco show.
