Echo And The Bunnymen - Siberia
Siberia is the fourth studio album by Echo and the Bunnymen since they reunited in 1997 and it can stand proudly with their 1980's glory days. It is an album full of good tunes, chiming guitars and mysterious lyrics.
The album opens with Stormy Weather, a bouncing, jangling song which was released as a single and deserved to be a hit. All Because of You Days sounds like a song from U2 in the 80's, perhaps because the bass line is of the simple sort which Adam Clayton tended to provide. Things are back on track with Parthenon Drive, a song which would fit seamlessly into Ocean Rain , and the best song on this album.
Other highlights are Make Us Blind, the title track and the finale, What If We Are?, which replaces the guitars with piano and strings and has a chorus with crowd singalong potential. It is a song about hope and includes the line "I know I'm alive because I know I'm not dead". Let's be grateful that the Bunnymen are still going strong.
Overall, the songs are polished and the playing accomplished but the album could use some more surprises, a change in the arrangements or more variation of the tempo of the songs. That said, the current wave of bands influenced by the early 80's bands like Duran Duran (The Killers et al) could also learn something from this 2005 album.
