Kill It Kid - You Owe Nothing

Back in 2011, blues-rock was riding high with the surprising mega-success of The Black Keys. Trying to jump that train were Kill It Kid with their second album, Feet Fall Heavy, which found a heavy blues sound edging out the folk flecked ambiance of their 2009 debut. In truth, they never hit the heights the critical reception seemed to suggest they would. Having obviously thought long and hard on that experience, they've taken three years to record their follow up. You Owe Nothing drops the overproduction, clean sound, and the scratchy vocal samples. And it's all the better for it.

Sounding thicker and more grungy, the band have opened their arms to a swampy approach to blues which feels more real and less clinical than their last attempt. The heavy riffs are almost relentless, though the switching up of vocals between de facto frontman Chris Turpin and sidewoman Stephanie Ward do bring much needed variety. The filling in the blues rock sandwich are the double drama of the knife-to-the-heart ‘Hurts To Be Loved By You’ and the riff explosion of ‘I’ll Be The First’. Finally it feels like Kill It Kid are believing in themselves. Direction found - things will be interesting from here on.
