Boomtown Rats - The Forum, London
With Sir Bob Geldof currently making headlines throughout the World announcing Band Aid 30 it’s easy to forget his current “day job”, fronting New Wave chart toppers The Boomtown Rats. Sir Bob rejoined the reformed rodents in 2013, with the band spending the last year or so performing shows around the world to fans eager to hear their late 70’s / 80’s classics.
Kentish Town’s Forum was the venue of choice for the London date of their “Ratlife” tour, with a decent sized crowd attending their Friday night show. The group have recently released a new compilation album - So Modern – The Boomtown Rats Collection - with many of the tracks getting an airing, including ‘She’s So Modern’ (still one of my favourite 7" of the Punk era), follow up single ‘Like Clockwork’, ‘Lookin' After No. 1’ and set opener ‘(I Never Loved) Eva Braun’.
The Fix viewed a short afternoon stint from Bob and the boys at Rewind Scotland back in July, with their performance the highlight of the day. The Forum show was just as much fun, with the singer as charismatic as ever. Naturally the big hits were rolled out, with 'Rat Trap' and 'I Don't Like Mondays' showstoppers, especially when Mr Geldof inserted his customary huge pause during the latter. The evening ended with a three song encore, featuring 'Me And Howard Hughes', 'Diamond Smiles' and recent recording 'The Boomtown Rats'. The self titled song isn't one of the best tracks in their repertoire, but it is nice to see the band back in the studio. 'Howard' and 'Diamond' sparkled anyway, so it was still a very decent end to a pretty rowdy evening.
