Grass Roots UK showcase

If ever there was a time to get involved in folk or country music in the UK it’s now. For a long time these genres have been niche and slightly frowned up by the mainstream, but the last couple of years has seen a huge increase in their acceptance despite still minimal radio airplay – an hour here or there on BBC Radio 2 just doesn’t cut it.

As well as the bigger hitters of the UK scene – Ward Thomas and The Shires are off on a UK wide joint tour – there are a huge number of lower profile acts that are making some great music. To aid promotion of the genres in the UK the Grass Roots Music UK Alliance has been formed with the express aim of increasing the profile of both the music and the artists making it.

Step one of the plan is a London showcase collecting together some of the best of those up and coming artists. There’s a time, a place, and a line-up - now you just need a ticket.

Where: 229 Club, Great Portland Street, London, W1W 5PN
When: Monday November 24th 2014. Doors 6pm. Show starts 6.45pm
How much?: Tickets £12.50 in advance from: https://agmp.ticketabc.com/events/grass-roots-uk/

Balsamo Deighton: Kicking the evening off are Steve (Balsamo) and Rosalie (Deighton) whose influence by 70s singer songwriters can be heard clearly on their early recordings. Though those tracks do whet the appetite for from their debut release, due in 2015.

Red Sky July: Playing country rock in the tradition of the greats from the 70s, this trio have echoes of Fleetwood Mac and Eagles. Obviously not at that stage yet, nevertheless their debut album Shadowbirds is one of the best UK debuts of 2014.

Lucy May: The singer-songwriter is prepping her debut album for release in January, so this is a good time to hear a preview of some of the tracks from the record.

Raintown: The country pop-rock husband and wife duo have made a Christmas song but it’s too early for all that. So here’s a track from a radio session they did earlier this year instead.

Frankie Davies: Headlining the whole shebang is this sweet voiced country singer, from the island of Jersey, not New Jersey. Her recent track ‘Superman’ is a great example of the talent we're currently producing, and she’s been rewarded with a trip to Nashville as part of the BBC Introducing showcase.
