Lacuna Coil / Motionless In White - Kentish Town Forum, London
While this was billed as a joint headline tour between Motionless In White and Lacuna Coil, there's little doubt as to who most of tonight's audience have come to see. The former make only their second appearance in London on the back of third album Reincarnate, whilst the latter have taken most of the year to finally play here in support of Broken Crown Halo. It appears the fans have worked up an appetite.
It may be Halloween weekend, but the abundance of colourful makeup, garish dresses and cartoon outfits are all standard fare for this audience no matter what time of year. Still, it is rather appropriate that Penn State’s Motionless In White are corpse-painted shock rock, not that there is anything particularly shocking about them. Plodding through an hour of cheesy choruses and clichéd breakdowns, it leaves us brain-dead and zombie-like by the end of their set. A full complement of twin guitars and jumbo keyboards should lead to a more exciting musical exploration, but the one key element they are lacking is imagination.
We most certainly have an undead Lacuna Coil tonight, visually at least, as they abandon their usual smart selves for bloodied rags and ghoulish face paint. It must be said, that with the loss of second guitarist Cristiano Migliore, the sound is a little peaky too. Now too reliant on backing tracks, his guitar lines join the keyboard wash resulting in a definite lack of impact, most noticeable on the classic 'Our Truth' that they close the evening with.
Also missing is much in the way of the band’s older history, with the only nod being 'Heaven's A Lie'. It's probable that Cristina Scabbia can no longer sing the higher ranges these were originally recorded in. Those setlist gaps are a disappointment, yet despite the fact that they are still peddling their awful cover of Depeche Mode’s 'Enjoy The Silence' some eight long years later, the overall impression is positive. The highly enjoyable melodies and thunderous riffs that their most recent offering heralded is something of a new dawn for Lacuna Coil.
