Twin Atlantic - Manchester Academy

Last time I saw Twin Atlantic play here was way back in 2010 when they opened for The Gaslight Anthem. At the time I predicted great things for them. Not to be smug or anything but, hey, I was right!

Now the Glasgow boys are back on the crest of a top ten album, bringing their high octane sound (straddling the Biffy meets Foos divide) to a hungry Academy crowd, equipped with all the musical ammo needed for a killer night of populist rock. Starting the proceedings off with a string of tracks from that recent album Great Divide including ‘The Ones That I Love’ and the excellent ‘Hold On’, the band then launched into a generous set comprising of songs from their back catalogue, including the wonderful rocker ‘Make a Beast of Myself’ from 2011’s major label debut Free, and ‘What Is Light, What Is Laughter’ from 2009’s Vivarium, with the crowd in full vocal support. Other highlights included ferocious renditions of 'Free' and 'Cell Mate' that really got the crowd jumping.

The night was not without its hiccups, with frontman Sam McTrusty having to start, and stop, ‘Time for You to Stand Up’ three times much to his embarrassment but done with such grace and good humour that nobody really minded much. A three song encore including two of the best tracks from the new album, 'Brothers and Sisters' and the stomping ‘Heat and Soul’ wrap things up, sealing the deal that proves we get things right every now and again - Twin Atlantic are here and they rock our world.
