Eat To The Beat: The Muffs

Given that it's ten years since the last album from The Muffs, you'll be excused if they drifted from your memory during that time. Lead singer and guitarist Kim Shattuck was back in the public eye last year when she temporarily held the position of bassist for Pixies, but we're more glad to see The Muffs back with Whoop Dee Doo, another fine collection of their candy cane-coloured pop punk.

To mark the comeback, we took Kim out for a metaphorical burger and 'shake and quizzed her about food as part of our ever-popular Eat To The Beat series.

What's the worst thing you've ever been presented with to eat on tour?

Kim: I'm not sure where we were exactly but it was Roy McDonald's birthday and they presented him with a nice birthday cake. But because I couldn't eat cake and they didn't want me to feel left out they figured out an interesting solution: a platter-sized cheese omelette that had Happy Birthday Roy written over the top in hot sauce.

Any special rider requests?

I'm a huge fan of those giant cheese and fruit plates. And if they have prosciutto I'm in hog Heaven.

It's a Tuesday morning, 1.00am. What's your default gas station purchase?

I will usually grab Lays potato chips, string cheese, cashews and bottled water.

Munchies! The fridge is empty! Big up the local takeout or restaurant that saves the day!

I'll go get sushi. I love eating raw fish. Also any Italian restaurant that has risotto on the menu is a friend of mine.

If your new album was a pizza, what toppings would it have?

I would have pepperoni, pineapple, artichoke hearts and mushrooms. And tons of parmesan cheese and tomato sauce.

We're coming round for a romantic (hopefully!) meal. What are you cooking up for us?

I like to make barbecue chicken wings and ribs. Something completely messy and gooey.

What does Black Francis eat on the tour bus?

He usually just makes himself a sandwich. Nothing very exciting.

What are the rest of The Muffs like at cooking? What's their speciality?

I'm not sure if the guys cook or not. Maybe Roy does, but Ronnie eats take out usually.

Favourite food related song?

I really like the song 'Pick a Rib' by Lionel Hampton. Or 'Here We Go 'Round the Lemon Tree' by the Idle Race.

We're buying! Red? White? American lager?

I'd have to say buy me a hot Breve Latte and I'll be your best friend.

Whoop Dee Doo is released on 28th July via Cherry Red Records.
