TMF meets We Were Evergreen
Ever since The Spinto Band, we just can't dislike a band that utilises a kazoo so Parisian indie pop trio We Were Evergreen are right up our musical alley.
Last month saw the release of their debut album Towards as well as a headline UK tour, which was preceded by a prestigious support slot with Goldfrapp. We caught up with them on their tour to find out more.
Introduce yourselves to the TMF readership.
Hi, we're Michael, Fabienne and William from We Were Evergreen. We're French, we make pop and we live in London.
Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this!'?
It was probably Jeff Buckley's Grace that made William want to start a band. And in Fabienne's and Michael's case, it must have been through listening to a lot of Paul McCartney and The Beatles.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?
Hmm, there are probably tons of old demos and rough recordings on it. Not sure if you'd want to listen to those though. Oh, and there might also be Wham's 'Last Christmas'. But that's a classic, right?
Is there any style of music you just don't get?
Hardcore trance and anything with Pitbull in it.
Your debut album Towards is out now. How would you sell it to us?
Well, it's not our job to sell it fortunately. However, we could say it's a blend of organic percussions, electronics and tropical folk. The album is a lot about movement and memory, it's a statement on how we have evolved as a band rather than a collection of old songs.
How did you find the whole process of recording your full-length debut and what's the feeling now it's out in the world?
The recording process was really intense for us - being in the same room for weeks, trying to stay close to the songs but being as open-minded as possible in terms of arrangements. We are quite proud of this first album, although it's hard to believe it's actually out.
Is there a lesson you learnt throughout the making of Towards (from inception to release) that you'll apply to your process when it comes to recording the follow-up?
For this album, we decided to start by playing the songs together as spontaneously as we could, and then working on arrangements on top of those takes. The idea was to give it a more dynamic, "live" feel - something we hadn't done before. It is probably something we are going to keep for the next album.
What's next on the We Were Evergreen agenda?
The Towards tour is not over yet: we're going to France, Holland and Germany. And this year, for the first time, we are playing at Glastonbury, as well as other UK festivals.
What's the question we should have asked you today?
Who loves the sun? Who cares that it makes plants grow? Who cares what it does since you broke my heart?
Towards is out now via Mi7 / Island Records. To find out more about We Were Evergreen, visit their official website - www.musicwwe.com
