Pink Sunshine: May 2014

Life is notably poorer since the BBC killed off The Radio 1 Roadshow, that regular slice of summer cheese that saw the channel's brightest and best pull up in our seaside towns, play some tunes and engage with the great British public in a variety of uncomfortable situations. Someone, somewhere is still dining out on the fact they won 'Smiley Miley's Mileage Game' in Clacton in 1983 or got a hug from Gary 'Oo' Davies.

The Big Weekend is no replacement, what with its relentless diet of thumping music and Edith Bowman. This year's BW in Glasgow features the likes of Katy B, XO, ALX and Kari - who barely have enough letters between them to be considered proper musical acts - and a notable absence of t-shirt competitions. It's enough to make you long for the glory days of Simon Bates.

Anyway, let's see if there's anything happening on planet pop to cheer us up.

The ABCs of Pop

Molly Beanland's new EP, Night Dreams was released earlier this month and anyone lucky enough to have heard it will almost certainly have been won over by its ambitious, 80s-style trappings and confident air. The title track is straight out of the John Hughes movie of your dreams, suggesting a young artist who understands that if you're going to do it like this, might as well go big. If I could quote Mr Bueller for a moment: "Only the meek get pinched. The bold survive."

We think with a few more tracks like 'Night Dreams' under her big red plastic belt, Miss Beanland could well survive, so sat her down with three Qs ('cos we know you kids have short attention spans), all with the vague notion of finding out where her head was at.

A is for ... Album. Tell us what the debut Molly Beanland album sounds like in your head - and what your plans are for the rest of 2014.

Retro-futuristic pop stylings, 80s influenced but produced in a modern way. As many hooks as I can come up with and cram in there, like a Kylie Minogue and Washed Out love child who grew up on Duran Duran. Plans for 2014? Next stop Isle of Wight Festival.

B is for ... Best Day Ever. What kind of stuff would you want to do on your Best Day Ever?

Hot-tub on a roof sushi picnic party followed by an Adventure Time-themed dance off with intense costumes and tropical cocktails. Then a snooze in a giant bed with loads of kittens, a Lord Of The Rings marathon and all you can eat Pinkberry.

C is for ... Character. If you could be a Disney character for a day, who would you be - and why?

I was obsessed with Ariel as a child but I'm really not a fan of deep water (figuratively or literally) so that might not work out too well. Can I go off piste and have Sailor Moon? Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight...
