Mystery Jets - You Can't Fool Me Dennis
Currently blowing up a small storm in certain circles, the Mystery Jets are certainly no better nor worse than any other current musical turn you might care to mention. It has all the usual things you expect these days, stuttering guitars and a ska-me-do alike underbeat to the whole thing. If you killed half of Madness with a hammer and forced the other half to play guitar rock you might get a similar sort of thing. It’s not a bad thing at all, mind you, and might have been a tune of the summer if summer wasn’t about to turn into something else any day now.
The B-side (Quite A Delight) is even more derivative and sounds a bit like them Dexy’s Midnight Runners yer old dad used to listen to, with modern electronic squiggles underneath. Not a bad effort but they might need to pull something a little more exciting out of the bag. Let’s hope its not empty at this early stage. It would be nice to be able to say that the production lets them down and they might be great live but it doesn’t and they might not be. A nice enough song and no more.
