Campfire Tales: Introducing Jessica Clemmons

Following the contemporary country-pop trail blazed most recently by Kacey Musgraves comes Texan belter Jessica Clemmons. Fresh off the UK release of her EP, What If and an appearance at the recent C2C Country to Country music festival held at London’s O2, Jessica answered a few questions for us.

Please introduce yourself to our readers!

Alright! I am Jessica Clemmons and I’m a singer-songwriter from Houston, Texas!

How’s your new album coming along?

Well, we have all of the writing sessions set up and I head to Nashville for about 10 days the first week in April. I'm so excited to get started on the new album. I will be working with some of Nashville's finest songwriters again and if the EP is any measure (which it is), then I think it's going to be great!

When will we see it in the UK?

I would expect by this summer!

You’ve just done C2C in London - how was that?

C2C was so much fun. I felt like I was back home in Texas with all of the country music fans all in one place. The fans really seemed to love the music and it was fantastic to be a part of.

And do you have any plans to return to the UK for a longer tour?

Oh, absolutely! 2014 is shaping up to be a very busy year for me. I've got some festivals this summer and I'm hoping to do my first headlining tour with the new album later in the year.

Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this'?

Yes! My earliest memory was when I was about 4 years old. I can remember exactly where I was when I told my Mom that I wanted to make "records". I can not remember a time when music wasn't my passion. I was constantly singing but it was when I sang along to Trisha Yearwood, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston that I knew there wasn't a plan b for me. This was it.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Oh gosh, that's such a difficult question because I've learned that there is no such thing as planning ahead in this industry! Well, very far ahead! Career-wise I hope that my music is being played all over the radio in multiple countries and I have a few more amazing albums under my belt. I've always said, I don't care about fame or fortune. If I can do well enough to be able to do this for the rest of my life, that's all I want. Now if I am performing all over the world and selling millions of albums, I wouldn't mind that either!

If we were to look at your MP3 player, would we find any of your own music on there?

Of course you would! I buy my own stuff! (laughs). I think I even have songs on there I've written that have never been heard.

Have you got any tips for other artists who are maybe starting out?

First I would say to them, don't expect anything to happen overnight and be ready for a lot of hard work. Next, treat every performance whether it's in front of 20,000 people or 20 people the same. Finally, don't give up. This can be one of the hardest industries to crack but if you stick with it and have a great team of people behind you who believe in you, anything could happen!

How would you sell your new EP ‘What If’ to us?

I think in a day where we are inundated with music that doesn't have anything to say my EP 'What If' is the complete opposite of that. It is open and honest with some fantastic melodies that you can't help but sing along to. From the start of the EP you'll be hooked and excited to get to the next song. Unfortunately there are only 5 of them but don't worry, the new album will continue the story of the highs and lows in life that you experience with each track when listening to my EP.

What's next for you?

I'm off to Nashville as I mentioned before to write the album then I'm heading to Los Angeles and Seattle for meetings and another music video shoot and photoshoot. I'll be back in the UK for the Isle of Wight Festival on 15 June and then more live shows after that! Keep an eye on my website for updates and announcements to be made!
