Introducing... Sarah Holburn
In the sea of unsigned and undiscovered singers, we occasionally hook one that we think deserves far more recognition. Sarah Holburn is the perfect example - talented and driven, she's just released her debut album In Too Deep...
Please introduce yourself to the TDF readership!
I'm Sarah Holburn, 20 years of age, and based on the coast of Essex. I was raised in a very musical family, and I eventually began learning instruments and uploading cover songs to YouTube in my teenage years. I enjoy playing guitar, piano, ukulele, and testing my vocal cords until I lose my voice!
You've just released your debut album - can you tell us a little about it?
In Too Deep is a collection of songs inspired by the seaside. I wrote them whilst falling in and out of love, learning about the music industry and discovering life. Each of the 11 tracks explain how I essentially fell 'In Too Deep' in a few situations, and expresses how writing those songs was my salvation and escape.
Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this!'
Yes, that was definitely McFLY! I was ten when they first came about and I've been infatuated ever since - I used to sing into my hairbrush and play the air guitar along to their music in my bedroom. At that point I'd never picked up an instrument though; I'd only sung briefly on a song my Dad recorded once when I was a lot younger.
What influences your music?
Having lived quite close to the coast all my life, the beach and sea impact my music hugely. Many of my lyrics have nautical influence, and I'm a firm believer in meaning every word and every note you write. Sometimes, though, songs just turn up out of the blue and land on your page for no reason at all. Whether you've had real life experience of the topic or not, you learn to love it knowing it might relate to your listeners (example: 'I Heard' from my album). I'm also heavily influenced by listening to The Beatles, McFly, Gabrielle Aplin, Coldplay and The Beach Boys to name but a few.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?
I'd rather you didn't see my Hear'say and Steps albums! I was always into cheesy pop from a young age (the first CD I bought was the Cheeky Girls single) and embarrassingly I do have my own songs on there! It would be a shame if I needed to show them to someone and I didn't have them to hand, right?!
Is there any style of music you just don't get?
I can appreciate most types of music - however the line for me is rap and heavy metal. I understand the passion behind it, but I feel it loses all sense of pleasure when the screamo starts.
You're currently looking for more exposure - do you have any exciting things coming up?
I have been asked to sing at The Gadget Show Live at The NEC, Birmingham, in April. I'm really excited to perform to fresh ears - there's only so many open mic nights you can do before the whole population of Essex has heard you!
What's the question we should have asked you today?
Perhaps "Where is your favourite place to write?". Well, take a guess... there's nothing I love more than going the beach and letting my thoughts wander around the outdoors. The freedom gives me the thinking space I need in order to write.
