Keziah Jones - Captain Rugged
If the world ever needed a real-life superhero, than who better than Keziah Jones? Charismatic, talented, vibrant, good looking, he fits the mould of debonaire cape crusader very nicely. And he comes armed with quite an arsenal: album number six, Captain Rugged, a stunning amalgamation of African beats, funk and rock. The songs are like scenes from a graphic novel, bristling with life and energy, peppered with Jones' trademark staccato guitar playing. His sensuous voice flows like honey, going from ferocious, as in fabulous album opener 'Afronewwave', to the super sexy 'Falling', Jones effortlessly hitting those sweet high notes.
As much a celebration of African music and culture as a protest against political dictatorship, the message is powerful yet never obtrusive. Songs like the marvellous 'Memory' or the fragility of 'Laughter' demonstrate a positivity all the more remarkable for the grief and destruction this artist must have witnessed. To channel such experiences in a stunning creation like this is indeed a superpower.
