Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks (Blu-ray)

The (digital) print is still tacky from our coverage of ... Bollocks' 35th anniversary edition, where we said it was a "... stone cold classic hard rock album - and one of the definitive populist statements of 20th century Britain." Nothing's changed in the months since then, but here's another version for the punk rock audiophile, if such a contrary creature exists.

Despite the public's unwillingness to pay much attention to either SACD or DVD-A formats, a few labels are testing the market for audio-only Blu-ray editions. These high-definition discs obviously require appropriate playback kit, which for most people will be a box under the telly. Unless you've upgraded to some kind of enhanced speaker set-up, you'll be relying on the audio capacity of your TV, which perhaps negates the 'High Fidelity Pure Audio' the artwork promises. Still, 2012's re-issue was the first time the album's master tapes had been used for a digital release, and this nicely-packaged set sounds fine - it's just our music kit is here and our video kit is here and we don't sit down in front of the telly to listen to music. Bonus material comes in the form of some (less-than-hi-fi) recordings, making this an OK investment for the Pistols buff, but with standard Blu-rays still failing to outsell the now creaking DVD format, we're unconvinced as to the long-term success of this latest industry wheeze. Still full-marks for the music, mind.
