Mogwai - Rave Tapes
Don’t be fooled by the title, Glaswegian post-rockers Mogwai haven’t gone all glow-stick waving techno nutters on us with Rave Tapes. Instead, they have fused the lush stylings of 2011's Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will with the sinister overtones from last year’s soundtrack to the brilliant French TV show Les Revenants to stunning effect.
From the opening bars of the gently meandering ‘Heard About You Last Night’ through the synth majesty of ‘Remurdered’, to the balls out rockers ‘Hexon Bogon’ and ‘Master Card’ right through to the closing strains of ‘The Lord is Out of Control’, there is nary a mis-step to be heard. Perhaps best of all is the brilliantly tongue-in-cheek ‘Repelish With’, the narrator beseeching us to live for Satan to a typically strident backing. Although Rave Tapes may not alter much from the well-honed Mogwai formula, this is an enthralling work that will burrow its way into your soul. Album of the year contender already? You bet your life it is.
