Various Artists - Frozen
Pleasingly, instead of being split across two discs, the soundtrack for upcoming Disney animation Frozen (out December 6th) contains both the score and the film's original songs, penned by Tony winner Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The former worked on both Avenue Q and The Book Of Mormon so much like the delightful film itself, while the songs could easily fit with classic Disney affairs, they come with a welcome modern edge.
Christophe Beck's score that makes up the second half of this soundtrack is sumptuous in its own right (especially the dark 'Whiteout' and 'We Were So Close', which soars magnificently), but the real draw here is the film's original songs. With Broadway experience in both the writers and performers, it's no surprise that the songs have an excellent theatrical feel to them, from the characteristic 'Do You Want To Build A Snowman?' to the overlapping vocals in 'For The First Time In Forever (Reprise)'. You've probably already heard the sublime 'Let It Go' and it's presented here in both Idina Menzel and Demi Lovato versions (the latter with additional verses and chart sheen), but you really only need Menzel's showstopping take. Alongside Menzel, the likes of Kristen Bell and Josh Gad get their moments and deliver with aplomb, without a weak link in sight. As should be the case with a Disney soundtrack, Frozen is magical.
