Lucius - Shacklewell Arms, London
Brooklyn band Lucius have recently released their debut album Wildewoman Stateside. Not content with wowing audiences back home the group fronted by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig have upped sticks and taken to the road for a brief European tour, including their first show in London, performing at the Shacklewell Arms.
The group's debut has yet to see a UK release so attendees at the sold out show were offered CD-R EP's (complete with free hugs). Fans may not have been able to get their hands on a copy of the album just yet but it looks as if it will be worth the wait if the live renditions of the songs are anything to go by.
Lucius's sound is hard to pin down, with elements of country, 80's electro-pop and 60s girl groups appearing throughout the night but each song's constant was the excellent harmonising from the two singers. Set stand outs included 'Tempest', the stark and eerie 'Go Home', 'Turn It Around' and album opener 'Wildewoman', but the gig was lifted from a great show to a truly memorable one when the band's much deserved encore came round.
As it was (almost) the end of their European tour they wanted to do something special for their audience, so took to the floor for a completely unplugged delectable rendition of 'Two Of Us On the Run'. Completing the evening with a further acoustic song, this time a sumptuous cover of of The Beatles track 'Goodbye' (a number two hit for Mary Hopkin chart fans), leaving us feeling we'd witnessed something very special.
