Johnny Flynn - Country Mile
Handsome Sussex troubadour Johnny Flynn returns to us with his third album Country Mile, and possibly his most impressive effort yet. The songs speak of travel, either that of taking to the road and following it (the title track) or the unpredictable twists and turns of relationships and the webs they can tangle, as in the South American influenced 'The Lady is Risen' ("Is it snowing in London and warm in your bed? / I have nothing to give you, I am cold in your head.")
The melodies and the arrangements are simple and unpretentious, allowing Flynn's remarkable voice free rein. Highlights include the charming waltz 'Murmurmation' and endearing lullaby 'Gypsy Hymn' with a female vocal harmonising above Flynn's like a bird hovering around its cage. The effect is both haunting and enchanting. Country Mile is a fine collection of songs that takes you on a trip through a young man's colorful imagination, proving well worth the price of the ticket.
