Various - Bass! In Ya Face
If you're looking for a respite from cheesy trance and house, yet still like to shake your ass, Bass! In Ya Face may be a shiny jewel in a sea of mediocre dance compilations. This mix of breaks, drum 'n' bass and electro (with an occasional dash of hip-hop) makes for a meaty, satisfying listen.
Fine mixes of hits by the likes of Audio Bullys, Kelis and Deep Dish provide a scattering of instantly recognisable tracks. Veterans of this area, The Chemical Brothers, are also present. Generally, Bass! In Ya Face represents a triumph of quality over commericality (while never being too difficult) and a chance to hear music usually confined to the sidelines. (Breakbeat, in particular, forever seems to be bubbling under, never quite getting the recognition it deserves.)
From furious loops to sonar bleeps to distorted basslines, there's plenty here to enjoy. A drum 'n' bass remix of Eric Prydz' Slammin' is surely more fun than his annoying Call On Me, and Tiga's cover of Nelly's Hot in Here is effortlessly cool, easily beating the original. Fans of slightly darker, more cutting edge sounds should lap this compilation up.
