The B-52's - Indigo, London
have been rocking and frugging since 1976. The Athens, Georgia band have released seven studio albums in that time, with 2008's Funplex being the latest. The group currently consist of vocalists Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson. The trio have taken to the road recently for an extensive European tour, playing a headline date at London's Indigo venue.
Although I've only seen the band once before at Lovebox Festival, back in 2007, I've been a fan for many, many years, even picking up their debut self titled album while it still included a free 7" of 'Rock Lobster', so was delighted to be greeted with a set that took in all stages of the band's career.
I do have to take a point off for the exclusion of one of my favourite songs of all time - 'Give Me Back My Man', but there was still plenty of offer to make it a stunning show. Huge 80s hits 'Love Shack' and a rollicking 'Roam' had the crowd dancing as if there life depended on it, but it was the material from the band's first two albums that really hit the spot for me, with 'Private Idaho', 'Dance This Mess Around' and 'Party Out Of Bounds' true stand outs.
The band were a joy to watch and I was in awe of Kate and Cindy's vocals as they're both true originals. I have to mention that Kate's duet with Iggy Pop on his 1990 single 'Candy' is my number one track from Mr Osterberg, so please check it out if you've never heard it!
The trio's London set was a triumphant return and there was a huge party atmosphere throughout the venue for the show's duration. Heck, by the time final song of the evening - 'Rock Lobster' arrived, even the boys in the balcony were shaking and shimmying, rewarding the group with huge cheers on the song's completion, no one wanting to go home.
