Majical Cloudz - Impersonator
Don’t be fooled by the name. Montreal based electronic-duo Majical Cloudz offer something a little darker than the fluffy-sounding moniker suggests. Just look at the greyness of the cover for a start. Yet with sophomore album Impersonator they bring real emotion to the persistent, occasionally repetitive, drones and solid electronic beats that make for their main output.
From the album’s opening title track, the confessional theme of the album is evident; there’s no skirting around the subject here, the lyrics are blunt, but brutally honest. This honesty, when paired with lead singer Devon Walsh’s raw and intimate vocals, prove to be genuinely affecting, which the music supports rather than overshadows. ‘This Is Magic’ uses a sombre and mellow organ to underlie the stark emotion while standout track - and latest single - ‘Childhood’s End’, has moments of sadness but this is more than wallowing, there is a haunting darkness at the very core. Montreal also gave the world the spectacles of Cirque du Soleil, but Impersonator is a different kind of majic altogether.
