Classixx - Hanging Gardens
Following the chart success of DJ and house artists such as Disclosure, Bondax, Duke Dumont and Julio Bashmore, LA-based production and DJ duo Classixx could not have picked a better time to deliver a debut. Michael David and Tyler Blake have made a name for themselves by adding their own disco-infused charm to remixes for Phoenix and Major Lazer but Hanging Gardens is their chance to step out into the limelight.
The title track instantly sets the mood: an addictive blend of electro-pop, 80s influenced house and effortlessly summery disco. The blissful holiday atmosphere continues in 'All You’re Waiting For', 'Holding On' and 'Long Lost'. No matter what samples, drum machines, synth beats or vocals are employed, Classixx manage to conjure up heady images of pool parties and sunsets on the beach. The pair stumble midway through, however. With few vocal samples or variation to add interest, these tracks simply fall short of the mark, and allow a dull repetition to set in. Thankfully, things return to infectious form towards the end; 'Jozi’s Fire', complete with 'Relight My Fire' vocal sample and disco beats, is simply 80s summer heaven. A few mis-steps aside, Hanging Gardens' winning cocktail of contagious, party-inducing dance and more chilled, melodic tunes will prove to be a hot weather soundtrack for many.
