Let's Say We Did - Hello Creatures
Odd key changes, scratchy background noises and songs that seem to dangle precariously on the edge of becoming an unholy sonic mess before somehow managing to become glistening jewels of alt-folk quirkiness. Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of oddball Swedes Let’s Say We Did, whose second album Hello Creatures is an unexpected joy.
Taking their cue from the late, lamented Mark Linkous, aka Sparklehorse, ‘Into Wherever’ kicks off proceedings with the kind of wobbly arranged, gloomy, shoegazey - yet downright enthralling - song for which Linkous become renowned. Things don’t slack off as you find yourself getting further entranced by the strange and alluring tunes that drift into your consciousness. The trance is only broken by the slightly misplaced closer ‘Boogey Den’, which is just too damn perky for what has previously played out, but that is a minor niggle on what is hugely impressive album. It makes the hunting down of Let’s Say We Did’s self-titled debut an absolute necessity.
