Introducing... Muncie Girls
Back in December, when we were kowtowing to industry protocols and scrabbling around trying to name a few acts worthy of your attention in 2013, Exeter trio Muncie Girls were one of our wild cards. Their unaffected approach to tuneful indie rock, filtered through a smart DIY/punk aesthetic has charmed us since day one and they've begun to make friends in influential places (Radio 1's Mike Davies, for example). We're pretty sure they'll charm you too.
They're about to head off - in their Mum's car - on tour, a perfect time to catch them before they, almost inevitably, blow up big-style.
Introduce yourself to The Music Fix massive.
Hello, I'm Lande from Muncie Girls!
You're about to head off on tour, visiting some of England's finest late night watering holes. Tell us a little bit about the tour, and while you're at it, one or two of your favourite shows you've seen as a paying member of the public.
Well, the tour is gonna be interesting. We're borrowing my mum's estate car, which is a definite upgrade from Dean's Peugeot 206 but is still going to be a phenomenal squeeze. We're playing a bunch of shows with friends so it'll be ace.
It's hard to narrow down the best shows ever but I don't think I'll ever forget this time I went to see The Weakerthans - it was awesome!
Do you have an earliest musical memory? Was there a record or act that made you think 'I want to do this!'
I wish I had something specific in mind but I don't! I guess I just gradually became interested in bands and music, with the help of Rancid and Less Than Jake of course.
I know that Luke has been playing drums since he was like two so maybe for him it was the music from Sesame Street!
If we were to look at your MP3 player, is there anything on there you'd rather we didn't see? Do you have your own stuff on there?
The most embarrassing thing on my iPod is probably all the Muncie Girls!
We're coming round for a - hopefully romantic - meal! What are you going to cook up?
I wish you'd called ahead, I've already eaten. Hasn't Cilla Black retired?
Can you remember the first song you ever wrote? Was it any good?
Yeah, I can totally remember the first song I ever wrote and it was genuinely the worst thing ever. And so were the next 20 songs!
What was your favourite album when you were 12? What was it when you were 16?
When I was 12 I think my favourite album was probably Deja Entendu by Brand New and when I was 16 it was definitely As The Eternal Cowboy by Against Me! I still listen to both those albums!
Is there a style of music you just don't get?
Yeah, loads! I don't get most dance music, metal, any band who think a cag-in-a-bag is good merchandise, dad rock, prog rock, and so many more!
Muncie Girls have been asked to do a 'duets' EP. Which four acts would you like to collaborate with?
Oh, great! I'll take Patti Smith, Green Day, Sleater-Kinney and The Bouncing Souls.
After answering these excellent questions, what's the very next thing you are going to do?
I'm going to read some of my book and then delete the Muncie Girls off my iPod.
What's the question we should've asked you today?
What kind of a question is that?
