Various - Annie Mac Presents 2012
I have an aunty 'Annie Mac', so my dad (her brother) was tickled when this CD landed through the letterbox complete with technicolor representation of the popular DJ's perm. However, unless they embrace clubland and that sphere's latest buzz sounds, then Annie Mac Presents 2012 is unlikely to interest your mum and dad; however, for everyone else, Annie Mac's latest annual mix is a solid end-of-year retrospective that compiles 37 choice cuts representing the cooler, credible side of Radio 1.
As on previous installments, the admirable Irish disc-spinner lets the tunes do most of the work, weaving them seamlessly together but content to showcase the songs themselves rather than flaunt tricks (for that, investigate her storming set on Channel 4's recent House Party event). Genres and sub-genres are celebrated with aplomb but, whether it's electro or house, dubstep or hip-hop, the pace remains on 'party'. Predictable but crowd-pleasing drops of Azealia Banks, Rudimental and Major Lazer complement more offbeat choices (e.g. inclusions from Nas, Drake and A$AP Rocky), while soulful vocals abound from the likes of this year's celebrated Jessie Ware and Frank Ocean. It may not be the most accomplished DJ compilation you hear this year, but this double-disc hitlist doesn't disappoint - let it aid you in cutting a rug on the way to the bus stop this winter.
