UK Singles chart to incorporate downloads
From this week, the official UK singles chart will be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century by incorporating music downloads. Making up about 45% of single sales, music downloads were recognised in their own chart.
While only selected retailers, including Apple's iTunes, are included in the statistics, the figures will be skewed away from independent bands who have yet to have their music included on such services and this has lead to some criticism, but as the market matures we can expect to see a shift back towards more accurate figures.
This chart merger brings together two entirely different markets - CD Singles are usually bought by the younger female market while downloads are largely made up with sales to males in their mid-twenties.
