Various - Real 80s: Hits & Extended Mixes

Real Eighties is the sort of compilation that could give the decade a good name, wisely ditching the frequently mined school disco kitcsh for more palatable sounds. From the new romantic likes of Visage and early Duran Duran, to the alternative rock of Psychedelic Furs and The Cure, to the electronic experiments of Art of Noise, much of this music has aged surprsingly well. Indeed, there's plenty here which has recently been covered (e.g. It's My Life by No Doubt), used on film soundtracks (e.g. The Killing Moon on Donnie Darko), or influenced today's acts. It's not completely devoid of horrors (OMD spring immediately to mind), but there are enough stone cold classics (Psycho Killer, Ghost Town) to make this a recommended purchase for those with gappy record collections. Just be thankful you don't have to look at the fashions.
