Trickbaby - Hanging Around
Trickbaby, having had success in India with a sell-out tour and songs featured in a Bollywood film, should now be set for fame in the UK. Their debut album Hanging Around may be pushed as East meets West, but, in many ways, this blend of sharp, modern production, traditional Asian instruments and singer Saira Hussain's pretty vocals is also a pure pop record.
Although there is the occasional non-English lyric and the tablas are present by the bucketload, many of these tracks are underpinned by dance beats or, as on single Slipping Through Your Fingers, fall into the same quietly uplifting category as, say, (a hipper) Gabrielle might have aimed for. Those expecting Cornershop-style experimentation will possibly be disappointed, but, if you're looking for a sweetened taste of the exotic, Hanging Around is a consistent and very likeable listen.
