missdavinalee - It's A Love

An opportunity wasted? There's nothing particularly wrong with this perky debut; hitting enough pop-rock sweet spots, it's bright and likeable if not steeped in a great deal of character. Fronted by the eponymous Ms. Lee, and offering a convincing enough way with a hook, It's A Love hits and misses in almost equal measure.

It's best when, as on the California-dreamy 'Blue and Green' or 'Dreams', which, unsurprisingly mirrors the mid-70s endeavours of Fleetwood Mac, it lets go and breathes easy. Doubts surface when Davina cranks up the guitars and switches to a kitten-ish growl. A smart policy, if you're not particularly cool, is to play to your geeky strengths and not work to be cool. Maybe it's their unwieldy provenance, the collective forming around their leader over a period of years, but missdavinalee have an almost schzophrenic quality. More focus and cohesion would have made for a stronger collection. And sorry, but this is unavoidable - terrible name for a band.
