Now 60 - Various Artists
It's so easy to slag compilation albums off as a mixed-bag of the singles that people want and the filler that people don't, but the Now series of albums have become such a national institution that it would be churlish to do so in this case. Heck, if you don't know what you're getting with a Now album by now, there's no hope for you.
It's my theory that Now albums widen the nation's youth's experience of music. Somewhere out there, some kid bought this for Girls Aloud, and ended up loving the Chemical Brothers. Someone bought it for Sunset Strippers and found themselves listening to The Killers.
That's not to say there isn't a bunch of half-arsed filler material here. Is anyone going to buy this for Styles & Breeze? Freefaller? But there's also the pick of the last three months of singles - Gwen Stefani, U2, Athlete, Scissor Sisters, and, erm, Tony Christie - all for the price of just four CD singles.
