Grinderman - Grinderman 2 RMX
Remix albums are notoriously patchy and this companion piece to Grinderman's 2010 garage rock masterpiece is no exception. The funky rhythms of UNKLE's 'Hyper Worm Tamer' is an unexpectedly top tapping joy while Robert Fripp's guitar wig out on 'Super Heathen Child' is simply inspired. 'When My Bay Comes' gets two diverse but equally excellent treatments: the Cat's Eyes version with Luke Tristram adds a layer of menace to an already disturbing track while the Sixtoes remix turns it in to a dark slice of fractured Americana. Best of all is Silver Alert remix of 'Evil' with the The National's Matt Berninger adding his own distinctive voice to its maudlin magnificence. On the flip side there is the annoyingly terse Andrew Weatherall mix of 'Evil' and the aimless Barry Adamson take on 'Palaces Of Montezuma', but the worst culprit is Josh Homme who really should have managed better than the unforgivably dull 'Mickey Bloody Mouse'.
If you didn't like Grinderman in the first place then there should be something here to make you change your mind; if, like me, you couldn't get enough of them, this will find a nice spot on the shelf, nuzzled alongside the original.
