SXSW 2012 - Saturday - Austin, Texas
By the time Saturday rolls around at SXSW you're usually pretty damn knackered! I had had at least two nights of three hours sleep during the week and one four hour snooze so was feeling just a little bit tired. I made it downtown by lunchtime but proceeded to sit in the convention centre for a few hours catching up online as I couldn't be bothered moving!
I eventually decided to view a panel in the centre as Cult frontman Ian Astbury was giving a talk. It was meant to be about vocal technique but it turned into a general chat about his career so far. I found it very informative, especially as I saw the band live on countless occasions from their Southern Death Cult days up to their Sonic Temple tour.
Although I was extremely interested in Ian's talk my eyes were having trouble focusing on the long haired singer so I grabbed some fresh air when the panel ended, heading up to watch Lights play an outdoor set just off 6th Street as part of the Live Nation party, a set that went down a storm with her all ages audience.
As it's the last day of the Festival you don't really want to be running around trying to catch showcases so it's fantastic if you can find a bunch of decent bands under the same roof. I've been lucky enough to attend Perez Hilton's "One Night In Austin" party the last two years and 2012's line up looked extremely promising so it was a no brainer where I wanted to spend my Saturday evening.
I got in just in time for the acts starting and I caught a large chunk of the bill, including third performances of the week from the always excellent Kimbra, Ed Sheeran on his way to conquering the States and a sublime set from the sound problem-free Cher Lloyd!
Perez was raising money for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation - its mission to restore instrumental music education programs to public schools in the States. The show raised $46,800, which isn't bad really!
I had originally intended on staying for the Ting Tings as they were meant to be performing but they cancelled all their SX shows earlier in the week due to illness.
I wasn't that fussed about shooting Timbaland as he annoys me whenever I see him gurning in his videos and B.O.B doesn't float my boat either so I called it a night on my 2012 SXSW experience after Dragonette's set.
Every SXSW I've attended has been great but some are always better than others. 2012 will be remembered as one those as I came away with pictures I was really proud of, viewed some tremendous acts and had a brilliant time socialising too.
I know it's a costly business coming from the UK but once you're there it can be done on the cheap due to the copious amounts of free food and drink on offer. I did blow a few more dollars towards the end of the week but I only spent $10 dollars on the Tuesday and $4 on the Wednesday, so it's certainly worth saving up for!
