Gotye - Manchester HMV Ritz
Australian performer Gotye is the new sensation right now. Forget the other "next big things" and just concentrate on him. Number one single, hit album, sold out shows...things seem to be going pretty well, and judging by Saturday night's performance at Manchester's Ritz, things will only get better.
Starting off with 'Eyes Wide Open' from his new album Making Mirrors the enthusiastic, yet annoyingly chatty, crowd greeted each offering with cheers. Even lesser known tracks like 'The Only Way' and 'Heart's A Mess' from 2006's Like Drawing Blood were well-recieved, with some punters even singing along. With a strong backing band and a bevy of drums, percussion instruments and electronic gadgets surrounding him like Saturn's moons Wouter "Wally" De Backer put on a wonderful show with the songs sounding just as good (and in the case of the slightly-lumbering-on-the-album 'State of the Art' even better) as the recorded versions, with the array of instruments and sound effects never distracting from his magnificent voice.
The real magic happened with the show-stopping number hit single 'Somebody That I Used To Know', the audience taking on the role of co-vocalist Kimbra's part, which they did with gusto! The other highlight was the spine-tingling performance of the beautiful 'Bronte' from the new album with Gotye asking the unruly audience to be quiet during the performance. "It's a very cavernous room and I can hear everything you're saying, especially you in the fourth row." It is a sad day indeed when a performer has to ask the audience to stop speaking during the songs.
But Gotye is not one to hold a grudge and returned with a rousing encore including the fabulously feel good 'I Feel Better' from the new album. The night finished on a high with a promise from Gotye that he will be back. Just make sure you mind your manners next time Manchester.
