Introducing...Jay James Picton
Having signed to Decca / Universal, singer-songwriter Jay James Picton released his 'Heads Vs. Hearts' mixtape - check out part three below - at the end of last year. With our interest swiftly peaked and with a tour with Rebecca Ferguson starting this month as well as a headline date at the Jazz Cafe tomorrow (7th), we decided to catch a brief chat with him to find out more.
What's your earliest musical memory?
Probably the music theme tune on Thomas The Tank Engine.
If you could hold a recording session with any five artists, who would you choose?
Difficult to commit to but (living) Danger Mouse, Kanye, Paul Weller, Jay Electronica & Paul McCartney. That would be a sesh!
You want to describe your music to a stranger on the street, who do you compare yourself to?
I hate selling myself and I wouldn't want to really compare myself to anyone, that would be dangerous... But its soul music with elements of blues and pop. If you're into real lyrics and a more live sound you may like my stuff.
You are going to live on a desert island for a year, which three albums do you take with you?
Nas - The Message, Danger Mouse / Daniele Luppi - Rome , Lewis Taylor - Bittersweet.
Everyone has a defining music moment, one that lives on in the memory, what is yours?
A combination of writing and collaborating with Booker and getting a big hug and standing ovation from Hal David after singing in his honour at last years ASCAP awards.
What is the best gig you've ever been to and why?
I was supported Pete Murray at his gig in Bush hall last year and he was amazing. He sang 'Better Days' and I felt and knew he meant every word and so did everyone else in the corwd... It was amazing.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Hopefully on a World tour somewhere! That or on a small fishing boat outside the bay of Saundersfoot (South West Wales - home) with my dog.
If we were to look at your MP3 player, what is the most embarrassing track or album that we'd find?
You'd probably feel embarrassed discovering 'Bachelor Boy' by Cliff Richard; me and my mates love that tune!
How would you sell your mixtape 'Heads Vs. Hearts' to us?
I wouldn't necessarily want to try and sell to anyone; I'd hope that who ever comes across the mixtape online would be into it enough to spread the love about it. It obviously came hand in hand with a visual concept via the Heads Vs Heart film series. I was really buzzed about the way they work hand in hand with forming an introduction to me and my music.
What's next for Jay James Picton?
I'm headlining a HMV Next Big Thing gig at the Jazz Cafe on the 7th Feb which I'm buzzed about then into rehearsal for preps for going on tour with Rebecca Ferguson. Really excited to express and share my music hopefully with a lot more people!
