Gretchen Peters - Hello Cruel World
In a week where the press will be in apoplexy over the release of the ‘debut’ album of the latest over-hyped ‘next big thing’, Lana Del Rey, the release of Nashville’s Gretchen Peters' latest album is likely to pass with only a fraction of the coverage - which is a real shame as it is a far more enjoyable take on the ups and downs of modern life.
Hello Cruel World is a beautifully written and performed selection of songs; from the achingly downbeat love song ‘Five Minutes’ through the lush jazz rhythms of ‘Camille’ to the heartbreaking ‘The Matador’, there is nary a low point. Above all is Peters' scintillating voice: from start to finish she provides drama and elan to songs that would falter with a lesser performer at the helm. Americana, folk, country, call it what you like but Gretchen Peters is a rare talent deserving of a wide audience. Do yourself a favour; ignore the hype for Del Rey and pick up Hello Cruel World instead.
