Casiokids - Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen
The release of 2010's Topp Stemning På Lokal Bar was Casiokids first entry into the 'wonky pop' canon. Although the Norwegian band's arrival was hyped up by all the right blogs, the language barrier (yup, the lyrics are in their native tongue - how dare they?!) meant the upbeat pop never really caught on. Could Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen do an A-ha and turn these kids into the new kings of the pop charts?
Well, no. But not for lack of trying. The opening title track is an instrumental mood piece that's more reminiscent of Sigur Rós than the latest hook-conjuring indie synth band, but following this offbeat intro they settle into a rhythm. I saw Casiokids support Hot Chip back in 2010, which is no surprise; here, the band revel in a similar mixture of mildly quirky, fun dancefloor pop and mellow yet melodic reflective moments. It's a pleasant listen, with enough energy to make it whizz by, but the lack of one single breakout hit means it's doubtful this effort will significantly improve the band's crossover appeal.
